★ Pushilin meets ICRC President who is visiting the Republic

Donetsk, Nov 6 – DAN. The head of the DPR Denis Pushilin met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer today, the Head’s official website says.

“The DPR Head Denis Pushilin met the President of the ICRC Peter Maurer. The event was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DPR, the representative of the Republic at the negotiations of the Contact Group in Minsk, Natalya Nikonorova,” the statement says.

The participants of the meeting discussed the conflict settlement in Donbass and interaction with Ukraine.

“There is an acute issue related to the inhuman treatment of people who openly support the Republics’ cause. Tortures to which they are subjected in SBU secret prisons, where people are held for political reasons, are recorded in the reports of such international organizations as the Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch,” the statement quotes Pushilin.

He noted that the very existence of such prisons and illegal confinement of people are gross violations of international principles.

“We insist on the closure of prisons already revealed, as well as on the further identification of such places of forcible retention of supporters of the Republics with subsequent publicity,” Pushilin said.

The country’s leader also outlined a number of issues on the humanitarian agenda, the settlement of which on the Minsk site is complicated by the destructive behavior of Kiev.

At the end of the meeting, Pushilin expressed gratitude to Mr. Maurer for the visit and “presented gratitude for the systematic support that the International Committee of the Red Cross has been providing to the Republics”.

As reported earlier, Maurer will visit Gorlovka dispensary No.4, where major repairs are being carried out with the assistance of the international organization.

Peter Maurer is a Swiss diplomat, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross since 2012. He visited the Republic in 2017.*ot
